Scarlet and Rhett bought a small, run-down, one-story rambler with no basement, which was perfect for them to make accessible for Scarlet - who uses a wheelchair.
Everything had to be wide, open and functional. Extra consideration was given to traffic flow within rooms and between rooms. Curbs and steps were eliminated, every room has a 60" turning circle, the Hall is 42" wide, doors are 36", switches are lower and outlets are higher than usual, low countertops have lots of legroom below and the baths are specially designed for Scarlet.
A 17' beam opens an entire wall of the Kitchen to the Living and Dining Areas -
creating a 33'x25' "dayroom." When Rhett's in the Kitchen making mint julips he can still fend off Scarlett's suitors.
Scarlet loves light, so two wide windows flank glass french doors that open to the Patio - which, like the Garage slab is flush with the floor.
The house was extended nine feet to the side and a two-car garage was added next to that. A new open-gabled covered entry was added in front of the door, with a metal-roofed Front Porch nestled between the Entry and the Garage.
Someday, the Butlers may add a circular drive and a Porte Cochere
